The University of Namibia in collaboration with the Netherland's Radboud University are working on a project to mount a 15-meter telescope at the summit of the Gamsberg Mountain to make Namibia a key link for future photographs of black holes in the universe, an official said on April 11.

Susan Marie Lewis, Press and Information Officer of Delegation of the European Union to Namibia made the announcement in a press statement.

The project is called the Africa Millimetre Telescope (AMT) and currently in its preliminary design phase.

The AMT project aims to provide the essential missing link to the network of telescopes around the globe-known Event Horizon Telescope which has just obtained the first picture of a black hole, said Lewis. "It has been found that Namibia is one of the best-placed countries in the world to take the best photographs of the centre of the universe, due to its positioning, dry climate and clear skies."

"Namibia is a prime country for this type of research and we are excited and hopeful that the 15-meter telescope and antenna can be mounted on top of the Gamsberg mountain." "This will enable Namibia to join in taking high-resolution photographs of black holes in the universe and to be at the forefront of ground-breaking research and development for humanity," the statement read, Xinhua reported.
