Nats place RHP Madson (back) on DL

The Washington Nationals shook up their beleaguered bullpen on Tuesday, placing right-hander Ryan Madson on the 10-day disabled list with a back injury among several moves.

In addition, the Nationals optioned left-hander Sammy Solis to Triple-A Syracuse, recalled righty Trevor Gott from Syracuse and selected the contract of southpaw Tim Collins. Kelvin Herrera took over the closer role until he went down with right rotator cuff impingement last week.

Madson then was named closer, and he blew a three-run lead in surrendering a walk-off grand slam to David Bote of the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night. Madson told reporters of his back pain after the disastrous outing, which caught manager Dave Martinez off guard.

"Yesterday was the first I've heard of it," Martinez said prior to Monday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. "Apparently, he didn't want to say anything, he wanted to pitch through it. He feels like he can pitch through it. I told him, 'You've got to be honest with me moving forward.'"

The Nationals proceeded to lose Monday's game on a walk-off solo home run surrendered by right-hander Koda Glover.

Madson, 37, is 2-5 with a 5.19 ERA in 48 appearances with the Nationals this season.

Solis, 30, is 1-2 with a 5.24 ERA in 50 games, allowing two runs without getting an out during Monday's loss.

Gott, 25, is 0-2 with a 4.96 ERA in 18 outings with Washington this season. Collins, 28, also previously pitched for the Nationals this season, posting a 2.77 ERA in 17 games.
