Former Kansas City Chiefs safety Johnny Robinson was selected as the Seniors Finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's 2019 class, the entity announced Friday.
Robinson had 57 interceptions during a 12-year career in which he was voted to seven Pro Bowl squads and five first-team All-Pro nods.
"I'm thrilled to my bones. I can't tell you how pleased I am to have been selected," Robinson said as he received the news from Hall of Fame President David Baker in a conference call.
Robinson, who turns 80 next month, will need to receive 80 percent of the vote from the 48-member selection committee to gain induction. The committee's decisions will be made on Feb. 2, one day prior to Super Bowl LIII
Robinson began his career as a running back with the Dallas Texans (who became the Chiefs in 1963) in 1960 before moving to safety in his third season. He twice recorded 10 interceptions in a season, leading the former AFL in 1966 and leading the NFL in 1970.
He also had eight interceptions in 1969. The Chiefs went on to beat the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV that season with Robinson contributing an interception and fumble recovery in the 23-7 victory. Robinson reportedly played the Super Bowl with three broken ribs.
Robinson had four interceptions in eight postseason games.
He played college football at LSU.
The Hall of Fame will announce two finalists via the contributor category, who will also need 80 percent of the votes from the selection committee in February to be inducted, next week.
