QB Herbert debuts for Chargers after Taylor injury

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Tyrod Taylor suffered a pregame chest injury, giving rookie Justin Herbert his first NFL start against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. The No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Herbert marched the Chargers down the field on their first possession and scrambled for a 4-yard touchdown run to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead.

It was the first rushing touchdown by a Chargers quarterback since Philip Rivers did it nine years ago -- a span of 141 games. Herbert's score capped an eight-play, 79-yard drive that included a 35-yard pass to running back Joshua Kelley. The Chargers announced Taylor's injury early in the first quarter and listed the veteran as questionable. He had been on the injury report in the past week with a rib injury.
