Zack Smith gets placed on waivers by Ottawa Senators on Tuesday: Reports
Veteran center Zack Smith was placed on waivers by the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday, according to multiple reports.
Smith carries a $3.25 million cap hit on a four-year, $13 million contract that has three seasons remaining.
The 30-year-old Smith had a subpar season last year with just 19 points (five goals, 14 assists) in 68 games.
Coach Guy Boucher declined to provide a reason for the move, suggesting reporters ask general manager Pierre Dorion.
"It's a tough day for the players," Boucher told reporters. " He's a good person that we all feel for. He's given a lot of the team and still does. Until further notice, his name's on my board. That's the way I'm approaching it."
It isn't clear if Smith would accept a minor league assignment if he clears waivers.
Smith was a third-round pick of the Senators in 2008. He has 165 career points (85 goals, 80 assists) in 542 games with the franchise.
Smith scored a career-high 25 goals in 2015-16.
