The Philadelphia Eagles placed running back Jay Ajayi on injured reserve Monday, shortly before several outlets reported he has a season-ending torn the anterior cruciate ligament.

It's unclear when the injury occurred, but NFL Network reported Ajayi tore the ligament Sunday while pass protecting during Philadelphia's 23-21 loss to the Minnesota Vikings and played through it. The report adds Ajayi will have surgery Thursday, and the belief is the ACL is the only torn ligament.

Philly.com reported that the injury is to Ajayi's left knee.

Ajayi totalled eight carries for 29 yards and a lost fumble, along with one catch for 5 yards while playing 29 snaps (49 per cent) against Minnesota. His last touch was a 6-yard grab early in the fourth quarter that was called back by penalty, but he appeared normal after the play. He ran a route from the backfield on the next play, his final snap of the day, with no apparent issue.

Ajayi, 25, tore the ACL in his right knee in 2011 while at Boise State and slipped to the fifth round of the 2015 draft amid concerns about a chronic condition in the knee. The Miami Dolphins gave Ajayi regular rest during his time with the team before trading him to the Eagles last season for a fourth-round pick.

Ajayi sustained a transverse process fracture in his back this season, missing much of Week 2 and all of Week 3 before playing through it the past two weeks. He finishes the season with 45 carries for 184 yards (4.1 average) and three scores, along with five grabs for 20 yards.

In the final year of his contract, Ajayi has 2,516 career rushing yards (4.5 average) and 13 touchdowns across four seasons.

After the Sunday game, Ajayi was critical of the lack of running plays against the Vikings, as the Eagles finished with 35 pass plays against 17 runs despite averaging 4.8 yards per carrying.

"With the offensive line we have on this team, running the ball like that, that doesn't make sense to me," Ajayi said.

Head coach Doug Pederson said afterwards he agreed with Ajayi's assessment but added that the Eagles' 20-3 deficit forced his hand to call more pass plays.

Ajayi's injury is another blow to a banged-up running back room. Darren Sproles hasn't played or practised since the opener due to a hamstring injury, while Corey Clement hasn't played in two weeks and is dealing with a quadriceps issue.

The Eagles filled Ajayi's roster spot by claiming defensive tackle T.Y. McGill off waivers from the Los Angeles Chargers. A former undrafted free agent, McGill has appeared in just three games over the past two seasons after playing in 25 for the Indianapolis Colts from 2015-16.

Also Monday, ESPN.com reported that the Eagles reworked the contract of defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, but the website added that the extra salary-cap room created won't be used to trade for holdout Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell as a replacement for Ajayi. Per ESPN, Cox's new deal gives the team an extra $6.5 million of cap room this year and an additional $11.7 million of cap space next year.
