Former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter pleaded guilty on Wednesday to a wire fraud conspiracy charge over his involvement in a sports gambling scandal that led to a lifetime ban from the NBA.
Porter entered his plea in Brooklyn federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge James Cho. The NBA banned Porter in April for violating its gambling policies by placing bets on league games, including a wager against his own team.
Prosecutors charged four other men last month for their roles in a sports gambling operation. Although Porter was not initially named, court records revealed his involvement. The scheme included placing 'prop' bets on two Raptors games and manipulating outcomes, generating over $1 million in gains.
