Lorenzo Musetti Reaches First Grand Slam Semi-Final at Wimbledon
Lorenzo Musetti, the 25th seed, has advanced to his first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon by defeating Taylor Fritz in a five-set match. Musetti will face Novak Djokovic in the semi-final. He credited his success to adapting his game strategy and fighting spirit throughout the match.
Lorenzo Musetti saved his best tennis for the end as the Italian moved into his first Grand Slam semi-final by outlasting American 13th seed Taylor Fritz 3-6 7-6(5) 6-2 3-6 6-1 at Wimbledon on Wednesday. The 25th seed now faces a massive challenge, as he faces seven-times All England Club champion Novak Djokovic in the last four.
"I'm really happy about what I've achieved today. Happy about the way I fought until the end," Musetti told reporters. "I found a way to develop my game set after set. It was a big reaction from me in the fifth. I probably played my best tennis of the week."
Musetti has beaten Djokovic once in six clashes and dragged the Serb to five sets in their most recent encounter at Roland Garros. The 22-year-old demonstrated similar resilience against Fritz after an early setback.
Fritz seized an early break for 3-1 after Musetti netted a backhand, and the American consolidated the advantage with a powerful forehand to set the tone for the first set. Musetti, however, raised his level in the second set, winning it in a tiebreak. He continued to mix up his shots in the third set, forcing Fritz into errors, and eased through with two breaks.
"That's probably something worse for the other guys, not having each shot the same," Musetti said. "Especially against a good baseliner like Taylor, if you play flat every time, you can't win a point."
After dropping the fourth set, Musetti rallied to build a 5-0 lead in the decider and closed it out when Fritz hit a shot long. Musetti's reward is a meeting with 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic, who advanced to his 13th Wimbledon semi-final after Alex De Minaur withdrew due to injury.
"With Nole, after the match I always finish with a lesson," Musetti reflected. "The last match was really intense and stressful. Against him, you're probably more stressed because he's one of the best ever. If I play a certain way, I could have a shot in the next round."
