Rory McIlroy took a significant first step towards overcoming his US Open collapse, opening with a 5-under 65 at the Scottish Open on Thursday. In cool, breezy conditions at The Renaissance Club, McIlroy found himself in a competitive position.

Maximilian Kieffer of Germany and Haotong Li of China set a brisk pace early, both recording a 64 on a links-style course that proved receptive to low scoring despite moderate wind. McIlroy, who took a week off from golf after narrowly missing out on a win at the US Open, focused on the positives from his overall performance there.

“I'm not going to let three or four holes cloud my judgment on how well I'm playing,” he said, referencing his strong showing throughout June. With eyes set on defending his title and the upcoming British Open, McIlroy aims to maintain his focus.
