French Golfers Gear Up for Paris Olympic Glory
France's Celine Boutier and Matthieu Pavon's recent rise in the professional golf ranks elevates French medal hopes in the upcoming Paris Olympic Games. Both teams will participate at Le Golf National, with four-round stroke-play events set to challenge 60 golfers. Event logistics and spectator limits stir debate.
France's hopes of securing a podium finish in the Olympic golf competition have risen dramatically, thanks to the ascendancy of Celine Boutier and Matthieu Pavon over the past year.
The French team will feature two representatives in both the men's and women's competitions, taking place at Le Golf National near Paris in early August. Sixty participants will engage in a four-round stroke-play format, with the U.S. fielding the largest team, led by world number ones Scottie Scheffler and Nelly Korda.
Boutier achieved a stellar 2023 season, winning her first major at the Evian Championship, elevating her to third in the women's world rankings. Pavon has made a name for himself on the PGA Tour, finishing fifth in last month's U.S. Open, reaching as high as 20th in the men's world rankings.
"This season is the best of my career, so it's fair to say the Olympic Games have come at just the right time," Pavon declared at Le Golf National. "I'm feeling more excitement than pressure and eager to start the competition we've been awaiting for years."
The Paris Games mark the Olympic debut for both Pavon and teammate Victor Perez. While it's also a first major event for women golfers at Le Golf National, Boutier is familiar with the course, which serves as a training hub for French youth players.
"Knowing the course is an advantage, but it's tough, and good golf will be necessary," Boutier noted. Though her form dipped earlier this year, she feels poised for a turnaround.
"I'm encouraged that the Games are coming soon," she added. Boutier, like teammate Perrine Delacour, prepares for her second Olympics, eager to fully experience the event after COVID restrictions at Tokyo Games disrupted the previous cycle.
Boutier intends to attend the opening ceremony along the Seine, stay in the Olympic village, and hopes to watch U.S. gymnastics star Simone Biles. Though Le Golf National successfully hosted the 2018 Ryder Cup, the Paris Games committee faces criticism for restricting daily spectators.
Golf faced limitations due to the Games' car use reduction policy, making it hard to attract large crowds with the venue's distance from central Paris, explained federation president Pascal Grizot. Consequently, only 30,000 spectators—about half of the Ryder Cup attendance—will be permitted daily at Le Golf National.
"These events are rare in France; not allowing fans to enjoy it is a shame," Grizot commented. "We've never had a top 20 player simultaneously in both men's and women's games."
