Colombia's aspirations to secure their second Copa America title were thwarted by Argentina on Sunday. Despite the setback, coach Nestor Lorenzo expressed pride in his team, highlighting their challenging path to the final compared to their opponents. Argentina triumphed thanks to an extra-time goal by Lautaro Martinez at Hard Rock Stadium in Florida.

Jhon Cordoba of Colombia hit the woodwork early in the match, while long-range shots by Jefferson Lerma and Richard Rios were saved by Argentina's Emiliano Martinez. Attempts by Santiago Arias and Davinson Sanchez in the second half also fell short, leading to Argentina's win in extra time.

Lorenzo, speaking at a press conference, lauded his players for their effort throughout the tournament, which took place in the United States. “They played six matches in 21 days, and it started to show,” he said. “It's not a complaint, but we hope for consistency to protect player fitness. We played the same number of games as Argentina but had four fewer rest days and had to travel more extensively.”

Colombia’s recent defeat was their first since losing to Argentina in February 2022. Lorenzo noted that his team is still in its early stages, whereas Argentina's Lionel Scaloni has had seven years to build his squad. “We’re just at the beginning. We aim to qualify for the World Cup and play in future finals,” he stated.

Currently, Colombia holds the third position in the South American qualifying table for the 2026 World Cup, with the next round of matches scheduled for September.
