India Women, led by the batting prowess of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, triumphed over arch-rivals Pakistan Women by seven wickets in the second match of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024. The match, held at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Friday, saw the Women in Blue chasing a modest total of 109 runs, starting their aggressive assault on the Pakistan bowlers from the onset.
Mandhana and Shafali brought up India’s fifty in just 5.2 overs, with Mandhana hitting a boundary off leg-spinner Tuba Hassan. Despite losing Mandhana at 45 in the 10th over and Shafali at 40 in the 12th, India persisted. Contributions from Dayalan Hemalatha, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Jemimah Rodrigues guided India to a comfortable win with seven wickets in hand and 5.5 overs to spare.
Earlier, Pakistan struggled to build momentum after electing to bat first. Indian bowlers, spearheaded by Deepti Sharma and Renuka Singh, stifled Pakistan’s run flow. Deepti’s three wickets and crucial strikes by Renuka and Shreyanka Patil restricted Pakistan to 108 runs. Fatima Sana's unbeaten 22 was the highlight among Pakistan's batting performances. This win reaffirms India's dominance in the tournament, setting a strong precedent for upcoming matches.
