In a significant leadership change, Suryakumar Yadav has been named captain of the Indian T20 team for their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, confirmed chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Monday. Yadav's fitness, feedback from the dressing room, and consistent availability were the decisive factors in his appointment.

Speaking at a joint press conference with newly-appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir, Agarkar emphasized the importance of consistent presence on the team. 'Fitness was a clear challenge, and we wanted someone who was likely to be available more often,' Agarkar stated. 'He is one of the best T20 batters and as captain, he is likely to play all the games.'

The series against Sri Lanka kicks off on July 27, with three T20 matches scheduled before the ODIs. Agarkar also discussed the overlook of other key players like Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul, attributing the decisions to fitness and tactical evaluations. Rohit Sharma is set to return as captain for the ODI segment of the tour.
