Global Chess League Reveals Star-Studded Icon Players for Second Season in London
The Global Chess League has announced its roster of Icon players for the second season, scheduled to take place in London from October 3 to 12. Chess champions like Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, and others will lead their teams in this exciting tournament.

The Global Chess League announced on Wednesday its list of Icon players for the eagerly awaited second season in London. Scheduled from October 3 to 12 at Friends House, the league is a collaborative venture between Tech Mahindra and the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
Among the star-studded line-up is world number one and five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen. Carlsen, who also participated in the inaugural season, will continue to represent Alpine SG Piper. Joining him are new Icon players Hikaru Nakamura for the American Gambits and Anish Giri for PBG Alaskan Knights.
Returning as they play a pivotal role for their respective teams are Viswanathan Anand for Ganges Grandmasters and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave for Mumba Masters. Additionally, Ian Nepomniachtchi will headline as the icon player for Triveni Continental Kings.
"We warmly welcome all the Icon players," said Sameer Pathak, CEO of the Global Chess League. "With such celebrated names leading the teams, we anticipate thrilling matches that will captivate millions of chess fans. In the weeks ahead, we will unveil more superstar and prodigy players for the draft," Pathak added.
Magnus Carlsen expressed his excitement: "The first season in Dubai was an incredible experience, and the team format introduced by the Global Chess League is very refreshing. I am eager to compete again with Alpine SG Pipers." Nakamura shared similar sentiments, stating, "I followed the first season closely and was hooked by the format. It offers an exciting opportunity for top players and fans alike. I am thrilled to join the American Gambits."
Anish Giri, thrilled about his debut season with PBG Alaskan Knights, remarked, "The unique format of the league elevates the competition. Fans can expect exhilarating battles between top male and female chess players." Viswanathan Anand added, "The inaugural season was a huge success, and the unique format has significantly increased the game's popularity. I'm excited to be back with Ganges Grandmasters."
Grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi, the new icon player for the reigning champions Triveni Continental Kings, said, "The launch season was captivating, and I am excited about playing in the second season with the champions." Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, representing Mumba Masters, said, "The first season was fantastic, and I'm geared up to return for the next."
The league will feature six teams, each composed of an Icon player, two superstar male players, two superstar female players, and a prodigy player. A minimum of three marquee showdowns will take place daily. (ANI)
