Five Australian women's water polo players have tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the Paris Games, confirmed the country's Olympic team chief Anna Meares on Wednesday.

Meares noted that the cases were limited to the water polo team. 'There have been five athletes in total who have tested positive,' she stated during a press conference.

'They are following all protocols. If they feel well enough, they will train this afternoon,' she added. 'The whole water polo team has been tested. They are wearing masks and isolating from other team members. They are avoiding high-volume areas like the gym and following our respiratory illnesses protocol.'

Meares emphasized the importance of these precautions with Paris 2024 set to be the first post-pandemic summer Olympics, recalling how the 2020 Tokyo Games were postponed and held without spectators.
