Olympic Champion Caeleb Dressel Challenges World Aquatics Over 2021 Chinese Doping Case
Seven-time Olympic champion Caeleb Dressel criticized World Aquatics' handling of a 2021 Chinese doping case during a press conference. Dressel expressed his lack of confidence in the organization's ability to ensure a fair playing field at the upcoming Paris Games. The case involved 23 Chinese swimmers who tested positive for a banned substance but still competed at the Tokyo Olympics.
Seven-time Olympic champion Caeleb Dressel put World Aquatics on the spot on Thursday, openly questioning their handling of a doping case involving Chinese athletes.
Dressel, speaking at a press conference alongside World Aquatics president Husain Al-Musallam, executive director Brent Nowicki, and fellow athletes, said he lacked confidence in the organization's oversight ahead of the Paris Games. 'No, I don't. No, not really,' he stated. 'I don't think they've given us enough evidence to support them in how this case was handled.'
This sentiment was echoed by other top competitors. Dressel, a decorated swimmer with five golds from Tokyo 2021 and two from Rio 2016, highlighted ongoing concerns. The doping case broke in April when reports surfaced that 23 Chinese swimmers tested positive at a 2021 camp but competed in Tokyo. An independent inquiry and World Aquatics' audit found no mismanagement.
'This team worked tirelessly,' Nowicki said, acknowledging Dressel's concerns. 'We need to regain his and other athletes' trust.'
Al-Musallam emphasized their commitment to fair play: 'Every athlete for the Olympics is tested. We ensure they are clean.' No Chinese athletes were present at the briefing; selections were based on availability, according to Al-Musallam.
