India Storms into Women's Asia Cup Final with Commanding Win Over Bangladesh
India secured their ninth Women's Asia Cup final appearance with a dominant 10-wicket victory over Bangladesh. Renuka Singh's exceptional bowling and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana's explosive batting highlighted the crushing win, outplaying Bangladesh in all departments at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.
India has secured their place in the Women's Asia Cup 2024 final following an emphatic 10-wicket triumph against Bangladesh, thanks to Renuka Singh's devastating pace and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana's powerful batting. The victory marks India’s ninth final appearance in the tournament, achieved by outclassing Bangladesh in all aspects of the game at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.
The 2018 champions, Bangladesh, struggled to build any momentum, with their efforts ultimately proving futile. India’s opening pair chased the modest target of 81 with aggressive intent from the outset. Mandhana effortlessly found the boundary on the fourth ball of the first over, setting the tone for India's chase.
Joining the charge, Shafali Verma displayed her prowess with boundary-laden strokes. Mandhana's intentions of an early finish were unmistakable when she launched the ball into the stands over deep backward square leg in the fourth over. Bangladesh's inability to adapt to the batting surface stood in stark contrast to India’s dominance.
Mandhana and Shafali’s partnership flourished, with the former scoring boundaries at will while the latter rotated the strike. Despite a couple of close calls—including a catch off Mandhana reversed by a no-ball and a dropped chance off Shafali—India's openers remained unbeaten. Mandhana clinched her 25th T20I half-century and led India to victory with nine overs to spare, finishing with an impressive 55*, while Shafali contributed with 26*.
Earlier, Bangladesh's decision to bat first backfired as their batters faltered against India’s formidable bowling attack. Renuka Singh's pace rattled the top order, removing Dilara Akter, Murshida Khatun, and Ishma Tanjim within three overs. Though Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana attempted a cautious approach to salvage the innings, wickets continued to tumble following the introduction of spinners Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav.
Radha’s left-arm spin proved particularly effective, dismantling Bangladesh's middle order with three key wickets, including that of Nigar Sultana. Despite Shorna Akter's late resistance, her unbeaten 19 only lifted Bangladesh to a meager 80/8. Renuka finished with remarkable figures of 3-10, and Radha supported effectively with 3-14. India reached 80/0 effortlessly, with Mandhana and Shafali’s unbeaten knocks steering their team into the final.
