Ferrari's Charles Leclerc clinched pole position at the rain-soaked Belgian Grand Prix on Saturday. Red Bull's Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula One champion, set the fastest time but will face a 10-place grid penalty for taking a fifth engine.

Verstappen, currently leading the Drivers' Championship and a three-time world champion, will start 11th on Sunday. Red Bull opted for the penalty at Spa, a track known for easier overtakes, as Verstappen aims for his fourth consecutive Belgium win. Red Bull's Sergio Perez, under scrutiny after recent performances, will join Leclerc on the front row alongside Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton and McLaren's Lando Norris.

Leclerc expressed his surprise, attributing his performance to the challenging conditions. "I did not expect to exceed our expectations in such tricky conditions," he said. "We need to focus on the dry conditions tomorrow. Without the rain, P5 was our target with Mercedes. The rain helped us, but I'm not complaining."

Norris, second in the championship, sees this as an opportunity to close the gap on Verstappen. The race mirrors last year's Spa qualifying, where Verstappen was fastest but ended up sixth on the grid due to penalties, allowing Leclerc to take pole.

Verstappen's unmatched lap time of one minute 53.159 seconds placed him 0.595 seconds ahead of Leclerc, who will lead the grid. McLaren's Oscar Piastri, fresh from his maiden F1 victory in Hungary, starts fifth, with George Russell of Mercedes in sixth.

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso, Alpine's Esteban Ocon, and Williams' Alexander Albon complete the top ten. The final practice session was virtually washed out by rain, with minimal driving and an early crash by Aston Martin's Lance Stroll.

Verstappen, who won from 14th last year and sixth the year before, faces a tough challenge this time with Leclerc on pole. Despite having only one other pole this season, Leclerc's Monaco victory might favor him, potentially halting Verstappen's winning streak.

"Qualifying was good, despite some rain," Verstappen remarked. "Tomorrow will be warmer with no rain, so tire degradation will be key. I'm hopeful we can be competitive."
