High Stakes Drama Looms in Men's Basketball at Paris Olympics
No team has reached the quarterfinals or been eliminated yet in the men's basketball tournament at the Paris Olympics. Tuesday and Wednesday are crucial for many nations, where medal chances hinge on performance. The U.S. enjoys a day off after their win against Serbia, as teams await crucial group play outcomes.
No team has reached the quarterfinals yet in the men's basketball tournament at the Paris Olympics, and none have been eliminated either.
However, Tuesday and Wednesday are make-or-break days for some nations, as failing again could mean the end of their medal dreams.
With all 12 teams having played over the weekend, everyone gets Monday off. For some, it's a chance to regroup and practice, while for others, like the U.S. — who dominated Serbia with Kevin Durant's stellar return — it's a day to relax and support other Team USA athletes.
“It's huge,'' U.S. coach Steve Kerr said Monday. “We want our players to enjoy the Olympic experience, watch other sports, and spend time with their families. That's what today is about. We'll refocus tomorrow.” The 12-team Olympic field will be trimmed to eight, with the top two teams in each of the three groups and the two best third-place teams advancing to the quarterfinals next week in Paris.
Teams going 3-0 in group play are secure, 2-1 teams are almost safe, 1-2 teams need help, and 0-3 teams are going home. Currently, Group A leaders are Australia and Canada; Group B tops are Germany and France, with the U.S. and South Sudan leading Group C.
Key upcoming matches include Spain vs. Greece in Group A, Germany vs. Brazil in Group B, and the highly anticipated U.S. vs. South Sudan game in Group C.
Next week's schedule features quarterfinals on Aug. 6, semifinals on Aug. 8, and medal games on Aug. 10, all in Paris.
