Punjab FC Youth Team Prepares for Next Generation Cup with ISL Veterans

Punjab FC's youth team is training with senior Indian Super League players to gear up for the Next Generation Cup in the UK. Midfielder Vinit Rai emphasizes the importance of this exposure and highlights the club's strong youth structure and successful scouting network across Punjab.

Punjab FC midfielder Vinit Rai has revealed that the club's youth team, set to compete in the Next Generation Cup, has been training alongside their senior Indian Super League (ISL) counterparts to ready themselves for international competition. Rai, 26, noted that he has played 104 ISL matches across eight seasons and most recently triumphed with Mumbai City FC in the 2023-24 season.

Having switched to Punjab FC during the summer transfer window, Rai commended the Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) 2023-24 champions for their efforts in preparing young talent for the challenges ahead. He stressed that exposure is critical for player development and highlighted the game time disparity between Indian youth players and their international counterparts. "Playing time in a competitive environment is crucial for any player growing up," Rai discussed with the RFDL.

The midfielder emphasized that most RFDL players will appear in the Next Generation Cup, having trained with senior team members. Rai praised the club's approach of integrating youth with experienced players, remarking on Punjab FC's robust youth structure. He noted the team's unbeaten run in the RFDL 2023-24 season under coach Sankarlal Chakraborty, showcasing maturity in defense and offensive consistency.

Additionally, Rai lauded Punjab's deep footballing culture, noting that the club's scouting network successfully brings talented individuals from village academies into mainstream football. "Winning the RFDL unbeaten and now preparing for the UK is a testament to the club's strong youth framework," Rai said, adding that facing teams like Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, and Everton will offer invaluable learning experiences for the young players.

Punjab FC kicks off their Next Generation Cup campaign against Aston Villa FC on August 1, followed by matches against Tottenham Hotspur FC and Everton FC on August 2 and 3, respectively. (ANI)
