Manika Batra's impressive run in the Paris Olympics came to an end on Wednesday with a 1-4 defeat at the hands of higher-ranked Japanese player Miu Hirano in the women's singles pre-quarterfinals. The 29-year-old Batra experienced a series of errors, losing 6-11 9-11 11-9 14-12 8-11 6-11 in a match that lasted 47 minutes.
Batra made history by becoming the first Indian table tennis player to reach the round of 16 at the Olympics, following her 4-0 win over France's Prithika Pavade, the world number 18, on Monday. This marks Batra's fifth consecutive loss to Hirano.
In related news, fellow Indian player Sreeja Akula advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's singles competition earlier in the day. Batra, who won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, had previously made it to the round of 32 at the Tokyo Games three years ago.
