Star Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz stormed into the quarter-finals after defeating Roman Safiullin 6-4, 6-2 at the Paris Olympics. The Spaniard delivered 21 winners and used several deft drop shots to secure a straight-sets victory in a 90-minute match.
Alcaraz is set to clash with Tommy Paul from the United States in his upcoming quarter-final match. Paul earned his spot by beating France's Corentin Moutet 7-6(6), 6-3. In the recently concluded Wimbledon 2024, Alcaraz also triumphed over Paul.
In the men's doubles event, the US pair Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram dashed the hopes of Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal for a gold medal on Philippe Chatrier Court. The American duo dominated the Spanish stars in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Krajicek and Ram consistently controlled the rallies, causing Alcaraz and Nadal to make uncharacteristic early-game errors. Despite a strong start to the second set from both pairs, the Americans capitalized on a critical break at 3-3 and sealed the match despite some resistance from the Spanish duo.
At 5-4 in the second set, a few errors almost gave Alcaraz and Nadal a chance for a comeback. However, Krajicek and Ram maintained their composure and fended off three break points, clinching the victory with a decisive ace by Krajicek.
