Hong Kong's Cheung Ka-long Returns Home After Historic Gold Medal Win

Hong Kong's Cheung Ka-long was greeted on Friday at the city's airport by hundreds of fans and journalists eager to see the gold medal winner who defeated Italy's Filippo Macchi 15-14 in a controversial bout at the Paris Olympics.

This win marks the 27-year-old's second Olympic gold medal, following his victory at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, making him the first Hong Kong athlete to achieve such a milestone. Donning his Hong Kong Olympic jacket and showcasing his gold medal, Cheung addressed Italy's intention to file a formal complaint against his win, emphasizing the professionalism of the referees.

"Especially the referees who judge the finals ... a referee for the finals must have some very good past experience," Cheung said in Cantonese. "I don't think there's any bad or one-sided referee." Cheung described his victory in Paris as one of the best moments of his life, thanks in part to his French coach. He mentioned that he plans to take a significant holiday after three years of preparation, stating, "Physically and mentally, I am quite tired. For now, I just want to have a good rest and prepare for the next season." He also encouraged the people of Hong Kong, especially young individuals, to engage in sports and uphold the "Hong Kong spirit" of perseverance. His immediate plan includes enjoying some local food upon his return to his home city.

"I went to France very early ... so I hope to eat some Hong Kong food," he added.
