Controversial Dutch Olympian Advances in Beach Volleyball
Dutch Olympian Steven van de Velde, convicted in 2016 for raping a 12-year-old girl, has advanced to the knockout stage of the beach volleyball tournament despite continued protests. He and his partner, Matthew Immers, look to proceed further, despite a final pool play loss to Tokyo gold medalists.
Controversial Dutch Olympian, Steven van de Velde, who was convicted in 2016 of raping a 12-year-old girl in England, managed to advance to the knockout round of the beach volleyball tournament on Friday. This advancement came despite the team's loss in the final match of pool play.
Van de Velde and his partner, Matthew Immers, are set to compete in the round of 16 either on Sunday or Monday, with their opponent yet to be decided. The 29-year-old athlete served 13 months in prison following his conviction. While many have called for his ban from the Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has stated that it lacks the authority to prevent the Netherlands from sending a qualified athlete.
Van de Velde skipped the mandatory media interaction zone on Friday, with his partner Immers commenting on their current positive mindset. Despite losing to Norway's Anders Mol and Christian Sorum in straight sets and facing boos from the audience, the Dutch team finished second in pool play, advancing due to a higher ratio of sets won and lost.
