Denmark's badminton star Viktor Axelsen successfully defended his men's singles title at the Paris Olympics, securing victory over Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the final on Monday. Axelsen, ranked world number two, dominated the match and triumphed in straight sets, winning 21-11, 21-11.
Axelsen's repeat victory places him alongside the legendary Chinese player Lin Dan, who won the men's singles title in both the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics. The Danish shuttler paved his way to the finals by defeating India's Lakshya Sen in the semifinals on Sunday.
Despite facing a higher-ranked opponent, world number 22 Lakshya Sen showcased remarkable tenacity, leading during significant portions of the match. He held a 15-9 lead in the first game but eventually lost 22-20 due to a late surge from Axelsen and some unforced errors. In the second game, although Sen initially led 7-0, Axelsen demonstrated his champion's grit by overturning the deficit to win 21-14, reaching the gold medal match in 54 minutes.
Sen’s Olympic campaign ended on a somber note as he narrowly missed out on the bronze medal. He was on the brink of making history as the first Indian shuttler to win an Olympic medal in the men's singles event. In a fiercely contested bronze medal match, Sen lost to Malaysia's Zii Jia Lee, with scores of 21-13, 16-21, 11-21, finishing fourth.
