Faith Kipyegon of Kenya opened her campaign for a third consecutive Olympic 1,500-meter title on Tuesday, advancing to the semifinal round after a drama-filled 5,000-meter race the night before. Kipyegon, the 1,500-meter world record holder, initially lost her silver medal due to a disqualification involving contact with Gudaf Tsegay but later had it reinstated on appeal.
Kipyegon placed fourth in her first-round heat, remaining optimistic about her upcoming races. “It was very hard, very hard for me. But you just accept the outcome,” she said. Tsegay also advanced, winning her heat, along with U.S. Trials champion Nikki Hiltz.
Elsewhere, American hurdler Freddie Crittenden benefited from the new repechage round to advance after experiencing a minor injury during training. Shaunae Miller-Uibo's reign in the 400 meters ended due to injury, but American Kendall Ellis proceeded, adding to the day’s excitement.
Key events to watch include Gabby Thomas in the 200 meters and the highly anticipated 1,500-meter showdown between Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Josh Kerr. Tara Davis-Woodhall easily advanced in the long jump, while defending Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo faced pressure to qualify.
