Andreescu's Quick Exit at National Bank Open Highlights Tournament Upsets

Bianca Andreescu's strong start turned into an early exit during her first hard-court tournament of the year. The Canadian was beaten 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 by Lesia Tsurenko on Tuesday night at the National Bank Open. Andreescu, who won her home tournament in 2019, hadn't played on hard courts since last year due to a back injury that ended her season prematurely. She recently returned to play in this year's French Open.

Tsurenko advanced to the second round along with fellow Ukrainians Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk. Svitolina, the 2017 tournament champion, defeated American Shelby Rogers 6-0, 6-2, while Kostyuk, the No. 11 seed, ousted Tatjana Maria with a similar scoreline of 6-0, 6-2.

In contrast, Dayana Yastremska, seeded No. 16, had to withdraw from her match against Taylor Townsend due to a shoulder injury, trailing 6-3, 3-1. Both Anna Kalinskaya, the No. 10 seed, and No. 12 seed Victoria Azarenka also advanced in the tournament.
