The government is currently supporting 1,050 athletes under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), which covers all their training, gear, and international participation expenses, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Lal Mandaviya announced in Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
Mandaviya detailed three government initiatives aimed at nurturing athletic talent from the grassroots to the national and international levels. This includes the Khelo India program, which has established centers in every district and organizes competitions for school and college students over 14 years old. Additionally, the KIRTI program identifies promising athletes.
In the Kodagu district of Karnataka, the Kodava Hockey Festival was lauded for its continuous efforts since 1997. The festival has produced 50 players for the Indian hockey team, including seven Olympians. While the government acknowledged their contribution, it cannot directly provide funds, but state proposals can enable support.
