Karlos Nasar Triumphs with Weightlifting Gold and World Records at Olympics

Karlos Nasar of Bulgaria secured weightlifting gold at the Olympics, shattering two world records approximately a year after a severe injury derailed his career. The accident involved a hotel sink severing his left Achilles tendon, which required emergency surgery and a six-month recovery.

The 21-year-old Nasar lifted 180 kilograms (397 pounds) in the snatch and set a world record with 224 in the clean and jerk, achieving a record-breaking total score of 404 in his Olympic debut. Following Nasar, Yeison López of Colombia claimed silver, and Antonino Pizzolato of Italy secured the bronze medal.

The weightlifting event combined the 81 and 96-kilogram weight classes from Tokyo 2021, making it a grueling competition. Several athletes faced injuries, including Egypt's Karim Abokahla who injured his right bicep. Despite his efforts, host country hopeful Romain Imadouchène didn't medal. Later, Olivia Reeves will compete in the women’s 81-kilogram division, aiming to bring a medal home to the US.
