Vinesh Phogat's Olympic Appeal Decision by CAS Awaited

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will announce its decision on Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal against her Olympic disqualification by Saturday evening. Vinesh, disqualified for being overweight, seeks a joint silver medal with Yusneylis Guzman Lopez. The Indian Olympic Association remains hopeful for a positive outcome.

The ad-hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is set to deliver its decision on wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal against her Olympic finals disqualification by 6pm local time (9.30pm IST) on Saturday.

Vinesh's appeal, stemming from her morning weigh-in disqualification for being 100gm overweight, was heard on Friday. She contested her ouster ahead of her final bout against eventual gold-winner Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the USA.

"By application of Article 18 of the CAS Arbitration Rules form the Olympic Games, the President of the CAS Ad Hoc Division extends the time limit for the Panel to give a decision until 10 August 2024 at 18h00 (Paris time)," stated CAS. Vinesh is represented by senior advocates Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) expressed optimism for a favorable resolution, emphasizing Vinesh's adherence to weight limits during previous bouts. After Vinesh's disqualification, Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez replaced her in the finals but was defeated. Vinesh seeks a joint silver with Lopez.
