Goals from defenders Ronney Willson and Kenstar Kharshong ensured Shillong Lajong FC prevailed over Rangdajied United FC in an exciting Shillong Derby at the 133rd Durand Cup, played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. This victory propels Shillong Lajong to the top of the table with six points, matching FC Goa in points but edging them out on goal difference. Their upcoming clash on August 17 will be decisive in determining the group leader.
Jose Hevia made just one change to the Shillong Lajong line-up, starting goalkeeper Neithovilie Chalieu in place of Manas Dubey. In contrast, Rangdajied United's Head Coach Ainbanjop Shadap fielded an unchanged side from their last game against FC Goa for the crucial Shillong Derby. The match was an end-to-end affair with both teams relentlessly attacking and keeping the goalkeepers busy. Aggressive tackles and a fierce midfield battle set the stage for an electrifying derby.
Midway through the first half, Shillong Lajong took the lead. After Rangdajied failed to clear a free-kick, Kenstar Kharshong recycled the ball from the left wing, finding Ronney Willson at the back post who headed it past everyone into the goal. Rangdajied had a golden chance to equalize with a penalty, but Treimiki Lamurong's attempt hit the crossbar. Towards the end of the half, Rangdajied's Denelson Pyngrope made a brilliant clearance, keeping the score 1-0 at halftime.
The second half saw Shillong Lajong extending their lead within four minutes. Kenstar Kharshong headed a corner kick powerfully into the net. Lajong dominated the game, attacking aggressively and forcing Rangdajied to defend deep. Hardy Cliff Nongbri's set-piece deliveries caused panic in Rangdajied's defense. With limited attacking options, Rangdajied could only muster weak shots that didn't trouble the Lajong goalkeeper.
Phrangki Buam of Shillong Lajong had opportunities for a hat-trick, but his attempts were either saved or narrowly missed. An impressive performance by the home side sets up a crucial encounter against FC Goa to decide who advances to the quarterfinals from the group. (ANI)
