Indian Men's Hockey player Sanjay's mother Kaushalya praised her son for winning a bronze medal, expressing pride and joy. "Congratulations to him, we are delighted. He brought laurels to the country. We are proud. We will celebrate and throw a party, we will invite all our relatives and the entire village..." Kaushalya told ANI.
The Indian Hockey Team received a hero's welcome at the Delhi Airport after clinching bronze at the marquee event. Throngs of fans gathered to catch a glimpse of the bronze medalists from the Paris Olympics, welcoming them with traditional dhol tunes.
Among the returning squad members were PR Sreejesh, Abhishek Nain, Amit Rohidas, and Sanjay, who landed in New Delhi after the Olympic closing ceremony on Sunday night.
The first contingent of the Indian men's hockey team arrived at New Delhi Airport on Saturday, while the rest who attended the closing ceremony arrived on Tuesday. India finished 71st on the Paris Olympics medals tally, with the USA taking the top spot with 126 medals.
On Thursday, a brace from captain Harmanpreet Singh and crucial saves by PR Sreejesh secured a 2-1 bronze medal victory over Spain at the Yves du Manoir Stadium in France. Under coach Craig Fulton, India achieved historic back-to-back Olympic bronze medals. Harmanpreet Singh's goals at 30' and 33' sealed the win, with Marc Miralles scoring for Spain at 18'.
The Indian team overcame a 0-1 deficit after the first quarter in an electrifying atmosphere. Sreejesh, playing his last game for India, was overcome with emotion as he and his teammates celebrated the historic win.
India's consecutive bronze hockey medals came for the first time in 52 years, since the 1972 Munich Games. Harmanpreet Singh emerged as the tournament's leading goal-scorer with 10 goals in eight matches, surpassing Australia's Blake Govers, who scored seven.
