Hockey India has decided to retire the No. 16 jersey worn by esteemed goalkeeper P R Sreejesh, marking the end of his illustrious career. Sreejesh played a crucial role in securing the country's consecutive Olympic bronze medals, with his latest achievement at the Paris Games.

In a surprise move, Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh declared that the affable 36-year-old, who sported the No. 16 jersey for nearly two decades, will transition into the role of junior national coach.

'Sreejesh will now be tasked with grooming new talent in the junior team, with hopes of producing another goalkeeper of his caliber,' Singh stated during a ceremony held to honor the veteran athlete.
