England has named its squads for next month's home white-ball series against Australia, introducing new faces and excluding several notable players, ESPNcricinfo reports. Jacob Bethell, Josh Hull, and Dan Mousley have earned their maiden call-ups for the T20 and ODI formats, while Brydon Carse returns following a three-month suspension for betting violations.
Uncapped bowler John Turner is also included in both squads. Experienced players Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, and Chris Jordan have not been selected for the series. Additionally, Tom Hartley and Rehan Ahmed, who traveled to the Caribbean but have yet to make their T20I debuts, are omitted. Mark Wood is out due to injury. Jos Buttler, supported by interim head coach Marcus Trescothick, will lead the three T20Is and five ODIs.
Buttler, recovering from a calf strain, aims to return in Lancashire's T20 Blast quarter-final at Hove before the first T20I on September 11. Bethell and Mousley, who performed admirably in the T20 Blast and The Hundred, have been included, while Hull, a tall fast bowler, finds himself named across formats. Mousley will feature solely in the T20Is. Jordan Cox is another potential debutant in the T20I series, having shown significant promise for the Oval Invincibles and currently included as a spare batter in the Test squad.
Saqib Mahmood returns to the T20I setup after overcoming back stress fractures. Brydon Carse is set to bolster England's pace alongside John Turner, who impressed on the Caribbean tour. The ODI series serves as preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Five Test players, unavailable for the T20Is due to a tight schedule against Sri Lanka, join the ODI squad: Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith, and Matthew Potts. Veteran Joe Root is rested.
Jofra Archer, named in both T20I and ODI squads, marks his potential return to ODI cricket since the 2022-23 tour of Bangladesh after recovering from an elbow injury.
