Left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya took two overs to polish off the New Zealand tail, helping Sri Lanka achieve a 63-run victory in the opening test at Galle International Stadium.

Chasing 275 for victory, New Zealand were bowled out for 211 despite Rachin Ravindra's determined 92. Jayasuriya (5-68) picked up his eighth five-wicket haul, seven of which have come at Galle.

New Zealand started the final day needing 68 runs with two wickets in hand but Sri Lanka required only four overs to wrap up the match. Jayasuriya dismissed Ravindra and then bowled William O'Rourke to seal the win. His match haul of nine wickets earned him the player of the match award.
