Revolutionizing Offside Calls: AI Tech to Debut in FA Cup

English soccer is set to integrate AI-based semi-automated offside technology during the FA Cup's fifth round in March. Initially scheduled for the Premier League, the tech faced delays in testing. It aims to enhance accuracy and efficiency of offside rulings, offering faster decisions and improved viewer experience.

In a groundbreaking move, English soccer will introduce semi-automated offside technology for the first time during March's fifth-round FA Cup matches. This AI-based player tracking system was initially intended for the Premier League following international breaks earlier in the season but was postponed due to testing issues.

Significant progress in recent weeks has paved the way for its debut in the FA Cup. Premier League chief executive Tony Scholes confirmed that the technology will be used in the FA Cup's last-16 stage, covering seven out of the eight matches scheduled for March 1-2, according to the Football Association.

The technology promises to deliver more efficient placements of virtual offside lines through optical player tracking and virtual graphics, augmenting in-stadium and broadcast experiences. While it does not alter decision accuracy, it streamlines the process's speed, potentially reducing offside check times by an average of 31 seconds. The Premier League plans to adopt the system later this season after its FA Cup trial run.
