South Africa's cricket team, under the leadership of captain Temba Bavuma, showcased strategic brilliance as they faced Afghanistan in the Champions Trophy opener.
Bavuma's decision to bat first on the challenging pitch at the National Stadium proved to be pivotal. The Proteas registered an imposing total of 315/6, thanks largely to a vital 129-run stand between Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton, who achieved his maiden ODI century.
Afghanistan, in response, could only muster 208 runs, led in part by South Africa's deliberate bowling tactics. Despite Afghanistan's initial optimism, their skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi acknowledged the impacts of the toss and the challenging pitch conditions.
