Rohit Sharma, a prominent figure in Indian cricket, has announced his retirement from Test cricket at the age of 38. This announcement marks the conclusion of an illustrious career marked by numerous achievements, including 4,301 runs over 67 Tests. The celebrated batter made this revelation via Instagram on Wednesday, expressing gratitude to his fans and reflecting on his journey in the game's longest format.
Former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly was quick to praise Sharma's contributions and leadership. Ganguly pointed out that under Sharma's captaincy, India secured several significant victories, including triumphs in the World Cup, Champion's Trophy, and Test cricket. "He is a great player for India, but someone has to leave the game. My best wishes to him," Ganguly shared with ANI.
Sharma's Test career began with an impressive 177 against the West Indies in 2013 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Despite challenges, notably in overseas conditions, his dominance at home was unmatched. His finest overseas performance came during the 2021-22 Pataudi Trophy in England, where he led as India's top run-scorer. The cricketing world now awaits Rohit Sharma's future endeavors, possibly in One Day Internationals and the IPL.
