The Government has unveiled a major boost for New Zealand's sporting landscape with a $5 million investment toward a new roof for Centre Court at Auckland's iconic Manuka Doctor Arena. This funding is the first to be announced under the new $70 million Major Events and Tourism Package, designed to energise the country's event sector, strengthen tourism, and stimulate economic growth.

Protecting a National Sporting Landmark

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston highlighted the importance of the project, noting that Stanley Street's Manuka Doctor Arena has been a central fixture of New Zealand's sporting culture for more than a century. Over the decades, the venue has hosted countless matches from tennis legends such as Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Serena Williams, while welcoming more than a million spectators.

"This is about future-proofing one of our most significant sporting assets," Upston explained. "The roof will not only safeguard against weather disruptions but also allow the arena to expand the types of events it can host. That means more opportunities for New Zealanders to enjoy world-class sport and entertainment right here at home."

Wider Benefits for Auckland and Beyond

The project carries broader benefits beyond sport. With the increased seating capacity and weather resilience, the arena is expected to attract a greater number of international visitors and events, driving economic activity and reinforcing Auckland's status as a premier events destination.

The ASB Classic, one of the country's highest-profile tennis tournaments, is held annually at the venue just before the Australian Open. With the addition of a retractable roof, organisers and players will have greater certainty, while fans can expect uninterrupted play regardless of weather conditions.

"This isn't just a win for tennis," said Upston. "It's a win for the local economy, for tourism, and for communities who rely on these events. A facility like this generates activity far beyond the court itself, supporting hotels, restaurants, and businesses across Auckland."

A Strategic First Step in the $70m Package

The investment marks the first infrastructure announcement under the Major Events and Tourism Package, which is part of the Government's wider strategy to strengthen New Zealand's event infrastructure and improve visitor experiences.

Upston emphasized that this is just the beginning: "This roof project shows our commitment to upgrading existing venues, but communities around the country will also see benefits as decisions are made on other priorities, particularly our hugely popular cycle trails."

Funding and Completion Timeline

The Centre Court roof project is estimated to cost $15 million in total, with Tennis Auckland co-funding the remaining balance. The new structure is expected to be completed by 2027, ensuring the arena remains competitive as a world-class venue for decades to come.

"This is baseline funding that gives Tennis Auckland certainty and the ability to plan with confidence," Upston said. "It's about ensuring that New Zealand can continue to attract top international talent, showcase unforgettable sporting moments, and give Kiwis access to world-class events."
