India suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of an organized Lebanon side during their penultimate Group D fixture of the AFC U17 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026 Qualifiers at the EKA Arena in Ahmedabad. Despite this loss being their first in the qualifiers, Bibiano Fernandes' squad remains in contention for qualification. The team faces a do-or-die match against the group leaders, IR Iran, on Sunday. A victory in this crucial encounter could secure India's place in the AFC U17 Asian Cup for the 10th time in history.
Earlier, IR Iran climbed to the group's top spot with a 3-1 victory over Palestine, amassing seven points from three matches. Lebanon, second with six points, has completed all four of its fixtures and is out of the race. India, currently holding four points, could overtake Iran with a head-to-head win. Meanwhile, Palestine and Chinese Taipei, still winless, have been eliminated. In their match against India, Lebanon's goals came from Antoine Assaf and Paul Maakaroun, capitalizing on India's defensive lapses in the first half.
India entered the match with confidence, following a 3-1 triumph over Chinese Taipei. However, Lebanon's pressing and tactical discipline proved too formidable. Antoine Assaf's 26th-minute opener and Paul Maakaroun's 38th-minute strike, boosted by a deflection, consigned India to chase the game. The Blue Colts' efforts proved fruitless against Lebanon's compact defense, and their frustration grew as Thonggoumang Touthang was sent off in stoppage time, leaving India on the brink of elimination.
