Ilia Malinin, widely known as the 'Quad God,' has set a new world record in the men's singles free skating program at the Grand Prix Final. His latest achievement boosts hopes for the Milano Cortina Olympics. The 21-year-old American figure skater achieved a remarkable score of 238.24, breaking his previous record of 228.97 set at Skate Canada International.
Malinin's striking performance included landing seven quadruple jumps, a feat highlighted by a one-of-a-kind quadruple Axel that only he has successfully executed in competition. Despite starting in third place after a challenging quad Axel-triple toe loop at the short program, Malinin's strong free skate propelled him to the top, culminating in an overall score of 332.29, just shy of Nathan Chen's world record of 335.30.
Japanese skaters Yuma Kagiyama and Shun Sato secured the silver and bronze medals, earning 302.41 and 292.08 points, respectively. Malinin's performance not only earned him the gold but also set a new benchmark in the figure skating world as the Olympics approach.
