Royals sign RHP Bailey to minor-league deal

The Kansas City Royals signed right-hander Homer Bailey to a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to spring training, the team announced on Saturday. The deal will pay him $550,000 if he makes the big-league roster and allows him the choice to opt out on March 25, according to MLB.com.

The 32-year-old Bailey spent 12 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds and threw two no-hitters but struggled last season with a 1-14 record and 6.09 ERA in 20 starts. Bailey was dealt to the Dodgers in December as part of the deal that brought outfielders Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig and left-hander Alex Wood to the Reds. Los Angeles released Bailey and he became a free agent.

Bailey is 67-77 with a 4.56 ERA in 212 career starts. He posted a career-high 13 victories in 2012 and recorded a career-best 3.49 ERA in 2013. Bailey's career got derailed after having flexor mass surgery in 2014 and Tommy John surgery in 2015. He made just eight starts over the 2015-16 seasons.

He was the seventh overall selection by the Reds in 2004. --Field Level Media
