Breaking Barriers: Sabastian Sawe's Next Marathon Challenge

Kenya's Sabastian Sawe aims to surpass his historic sub-two-hour marathon record at the Berlin Marathon this September. Following his landmark victory in London, Sawe will compete on one of the world's fastest courses, where his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge holds the current record. Nearly 60,000 athletes are expected to participate.

Kenya's marathon sensation, Sabastian Sawe, who made history as the first man to officially break the two-hour marathon barrier, is setting his sights on another record at the Berlin Marathon this September, according to organizers.

Sawe, 31, clocked an impressive one hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds at the London Marathon. With a competitive spirit, he will defend his Berlin title on September 27, a venue renowned for its flat, record-friendly course.

While his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge still holds the Berlin course record with a time of 2:01:09, Sawe remains optimistic about his chances. The 2026 Berlin Marathon is anticipated to draw nearly 60,000 athletes worldwide.
