Olympic medallist wrestler Bajrang Punia urged fellow athlete Vinesh Phogat to remain strong after her attempt to qualify for the Asian Games ended in disappointment. Her return to competitive wrestling saw her fall to Meenakshi Goyat in the 53kg semifinals, thereby exiting the selection trials.
Punia, while heartening Vinesh, emphasized that the outcome of a single trial cannot overshadow her years of contributions to Indian wrestling. "A champion doesn’t lose from defeat, but from conceding defeat," he stated, referencing Vinesh’s fight against the sporting establishment. In a veiled critique, he called for fairness and respect from sports authorities.
Vinesh, back on the mat after her 2024 Olympic setback, fought through intense rounds but faced an abrupt finish against Meenakshi Goyat. Despite the loss, she expressed no sense of failure, acknowledging the systemic challenges she has faced and reaffirming her commitment to return stronger.
Refusing to view her defeat as a permanent setback, Vinesh articulated her struggles against discriminatory practices and mental harassment within the wrestling administration. Asserting her pride in her achievements, she highlighted her determination to overcome systemic obstacles and continue pursuing her passion for wrestling.
