Somali Referee Barred from U.S.: Artan's World Cup Dream Derailed
Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, denied entry to the U.S., thanks FIFA and CAF for support after missing his World Cup officiating debut. Despite efforts from Somali officials, Artan couldn't enter due to visa issues stemming from wider travel bans affecting Somali nationals, thwarting his presence at the World Cup.
Somali soccer referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has expressed gratitude to FIFA, CAF, and his fellow citizens amidst disappointment surrounding his missed opportunity to officiate at the World Cup. Artan was barred from entering the United States, which resulted in his exclusion from the global event.
Hoping to make history as the first Somali referee at the World Cup, Artan's plans were disrupted due to U.S. entry denial, linked to concerns flagged by Customs and Border Protection. Somalia's government and sports ministry lamented the situation as a setback for national pride.
Efforts from Somalia to reverse the entry decision proved futile, as FIFA highlighted its non-involvement in the host nation's immigration procedures. Consequently, Artan's role in matches across Canada and Mexico is also compromised due to logistical necessities requiring his presence in the U.S.
