Reports: Buchholz, Blue Jays agree to deal
Free-agent right-handed pitcher Clay Buchholz has agreed to a contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to multiple reports. Terms weren't immediately available, and the deal is pending a physical.
Buchholz rejuvenated his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks last season, going 7-2 with a 2.01 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 98 1/3 innings over 16 starts last season for the National League West club. But his season was cut short because of a strained flexor mass in his right elbow, though he didn't need surgery. In his 12-year major league career, Buchholz, 34, had some productive seasons with the Boston Red Sox, throwing a no-hitter in 2007 in only his second career start. While compiling an 81-61 record with a 3.96 ERA in 10 seasons with the Red Sox, Buchholz also experienced a number of injuries.
He was shut down during his rookie season because of shoulder fatigue, and also suffered a pulled hamstring in 2010 after making the All-Star team, a stress fracture in 2011 and a knee injury in 2014. In 2015, an elbow injury preceded forearm surgery that knocked him out of most of the 2017 season with the Philadelphia Phillies as he went 0-1 with a 12.27 ERA in only two starts.
