Nationals name Scherzer opening day starter

Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer will be the Washington Nationals' opening day starter. Manager Dave Martinez feigned surprise announcing the move.

"I'm going to go out on a limb today and tell you that Max will be our Opening Day starter," Martinez said. It will be Scherzer's fourth opening day nod in five seasons with the team, and it pits him against last year's Cy Young Award winner, Jacob deGrom of the New York Mets, on March 28 in D.C. Scherzer finished second to deGrom in Cy Young balloting last year.

Scherzer went 18-7 with a 2.53 ERA and a career-high 300 strikeouts for the Nats last year. He is a six-time All-Star. --Field Level Media
