The Boston Red Sox scratched J.D. Martinez from Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays due to back spasms. Martinez was in the original lineup as the designated hitter but was scratched well before the scheduled first pitch. He was replaced in the lineup by Steve Pearce.
Martinez entered Saturday with a .340 batting average, which ranks seventh in the American League. He has four homers and 13 RBIs and has hit safely in 24 of his 26 games this season. Last season Martinez batted .330 with 43 homers and 130 RBIs.
