Indians call up minor league steals leader Mercado

The Cleveland Indians called up outfield prospect Oscar Mercado, who currently leads the minor leagues with 14 stolen bases. Mercado, 24, is hitting .294 with 10 doubles, four homers and 15 RBIs in 30 games at Triple-A Columbus. He has stolen 14 bases in 17 attempts and scored 24 runs.

Mercado was expected to make his major league debut on Tuesday afternoon when the visiting Indians play the Chicago White Sox. A 2013 second-round pick who was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals last July, Mercado batted .400 (16 for 40) during spring training with Cleveland.

In a corresponding transaction, the Indians placed outfielder Tyler Naquin on the 10-day injured list with a left calf strain. The move is retroactive to May 11. Naquin is batting .278 with one homer and 10 RBIs in 30 games this season.
