The Calgary Flames got two goals from Johnny Gaudreau and one from Michael Frolik in the first three minutes of the third period to defeat the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 on Thursday night. Travis Hamonic added a goal and an assist for the Flames, who have won their first seven games for new coach Geoff Ward. Sean Monahan had two assists.

John Tavares and Mitchell Marner each had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who had won the first two games of a four-game road trip. They are 6-4-0 under new coach Sheldon Keefe. David Rittich made 32 saves for the Flames.

Frederik Andersen made 20 saves in the Toronto goal. Tavares scored his 13th goal of the season at 8:24 of the first period on a snap shot from just below the right circle, converting Marner's no-look backhand pass from behind the net.

Hamonic tied the game at 16:23 of the first with a wrist shot from the right circle on a pass from the right point by Monahan. Toronto had a 10-9 edge in shots on goal in the first period.

The Maple Leafs regained the lead at 14:06 of the second when Marner notched his fifth goal of the season. He fired a wrist shot from the right circle after working a give-and-go with Tavares on a three-on-two rush. The Leafs led 23-17 in shots on goal after two periods before the Flames' surge in the first 2:49 of the third period.

Gaudreau tied the game 19 seconds into the period from the right circle on a pass from the boards by Mikael Backlund. Frolik scored his fourth goal of the season from the left circle after a Toronto turnover in the neutral zone at 1:59 of the third.

Calgary led 4-2 when Gaudreau deflected Hamonic's shot from the point at 2:49. Soon after their scoring burst, the Flames took two quick penalties, and the Maple Leafs had four shots but no goals during a five-on-three man advantage.

Tavares missed on a breakaway with five minutes left in the game.
